This vast white marble palace which appears to float in the centre of the lake is one of the most famous views of India. Originally built 250 years ago as a summer palace, recent renovations have recreated the marble pillars, ornate coloured glasswork and idyllic gardens of halcyon days. A hotel on a very grand scale, the 84 bedrooms and innumerable lounges and terraces offer sumptuous luxury and exquisite furnishings.
Now under new management of Taj hotels, the hotel enjoys excellent service and is famous for those steamy scenes in 007’s Octopussy. It can also reclaim a full lake following the 2006 monsoon (contrary to many out of date guide books). However lake views are not with all rooms and the rooms are rather more in keeping with a city Taj hotel. Except the presidential and Royal suites .
Guests are greeted city side and escorted by boat to the palace which is a super experience on a sunny day.
Dining is an experience, whether taken in the durbar, the lily pond courtyard or intimately on a flotilla or over the lake. The courtyard is surprisingly large and a flourishing arboretum. The long verrandas are ideal for stretching your legs “period style”, arm in arm.
The swimming pool is a perfect retreat for sunbathing or swimming, or visit the luxurious spa for full top to toe pampering.
Evening entertainment may include music and dance shows or romantic champagne boat rides over a starlit lake. Lake Palace is a popular choice so early booking is required.
