Shergarh or 'tiger place' is the creation of naturalist Jehan and his English wife Katie. Having made Kanha national park their home for many years now, they take their conservation projects very seriously, hoping to educate their guests as they provide a very special and personal wildlife experience.
The 27 villages originally located within Kanha national park has been re-sited just beyond in an area protected by the Forest Department, where locals can graze cattle and collect wood. The ancient agricultural methods of ‘slash and burn’ meant no earth was cut and crop shifting allowed the forest to rejuvenate, respecting earth and nature.
The Tiger Reserve provides employment to many, as mahouts, jeep drivers, resort staff and local restaurant workers.
Shergarh's tents are more like small bungalows with their air of permanence, thatched or tiled roofs and extended verandas. Meals are taken in the main house nearby. Depending on the season you have chosen, evenings may be spent gossiping around an open fire, or lazing on the deep veranda watching nature preparing for bed across the lake.
