The Raj Palace was the first mansion to be built in Jaipur in 1728 within the 'Pink City' walls, and remained in Royal hands until 1997 when the family renovated the elaborate complex. Restored to its former glory, it reflects the master craftsmen of the region with frescoes, mirror work and stone carvings, to offer exquisite luxury accommodation and excellent service to its guests. Indeed the Raj Palace boasts the most expensive hotel suite in the world, and is still home to the mother of the Maharaja of Jaipur.
It is impossible to describe the Raj Palace without overdosing on superlatives; the sheer richness of the sumptuous décor is overwhelming. Italian marble floors, Rajastani artwork, rare woods, silk and brocades, priceless antiques and furnishings are all around you. Carefully included are all the trappings desired by the 21st century traveller.
Much of the furniture was created by Spanish craftsmen who work for Buckingham Palace. Raj Palace amongst others, claims to have the largest crystal chandelier in India which hangs magnificently in the reception hall.
The beautiful heirlooms of the Royal family are encased for all to see - gowns, artefacts, slippers, personal memorabilia. The 200 year old stain glass windows and a royal crockery are all in use.
It is very easy to feel at home in this hotel despite its nobility - private sitting rooms and verandas create peaceful hideaways, yet a curator is always at hand for the learned.
We were greeted with smiles and frothy mango smoothies, to easy our welcome followed by personalised stationery awaiting us within the suite - a charming details which truly surpassed our expectations.
