Though built by an international chain the hotel has been developed in conjunction with the local styles and materials. Views from the villas, most of the rooms, and the open air restaurant are across the vast Lake Vembanad, letting the lush landscape and dramatic evening skies speak for themselves. A cluster of islands make up the local village of Kumarakom offering a fascinating insight into local life. Watch the local fishermen bring in their catch, brave the (mostly) flat cycle paths around, or simply chill by the magnificent pool.
Elegant rooms are spacious and very well furnished, though in a fairly bland, contemporary style.
The more expensive individual villas are especially grand, enjoying private gardens with Jacuzzi pools.
Restaurants cater for both the air-con devotee and those guests wishing to enjoy the balmy evenings in the open air. The good humoured chefs recognize that though many guests will wish to sample the local dishes they also provide a good selection of pizzas and burgers for young people who may be more conservative.
Though peak season is November – March, there are excellent deals in the mid monsoon month of August when much of the rain falls at night and you can still enjoy hot, sunny days. A rainy day provides a wonderful excuse to indulge in a visit to the spa which offers programmes from traditional ayurveda to modern beauty packages.
This long coastline of Kerala is rich in picture book beaches, with a network of meandering rivers, canals and streams. You should not leave without taking a day to explore the Backwaters with its rich snapshot of Keralan life.
