This elegant 18th century French Colonial villa owes much of its heritage to the home of the French Governor, Marquis Joseph-Francois Dupleix. Though originally built as the home of the Mayor of Pondicherry, material was ‘salvaged’ from the Governor’s villa nearby (now not in use); for example, a large traditional swing in the hallway and some exquisite carved woodwork seen around the villa.
Refurbishment was lengthy and painstaking over 4 years using age old methods to preserve the building’s integrity. To this core was added exciting modern touches; a glass walkway, silver painted wrought iron balconies, a stone waterfall and mezzanine floors within high ceiling bedrooms.
The Governor’s Lounge and Bar offers superb French and Indian cuisine. Dine indoors, in the elegant courtyard under the stars or in the shade of the ancient mango tree. No buffet queues here, all is elegant silver service.
Under the watchful eye of French-born Pascale, her staff will happily help you with any request, ensuring a memorable stay.
The long promenade, with its ‘south of France’ air, Indian Ocean and shopping areas with good quality local products are but a few moments walk away.

- Only 14 rooms - and popular due to its excellent reputation
- A couple of the cheaper rooms have no windows, but with grand doors opening onto the courtyard they are still charming
- No pool but the beauty of Pondicherry is that it is a place to be experience and explored.
