Once the home of the Prime Minister - and considerably larger than No.10 – the Jai Mahal Palace became one of India’s first palace hotels in 1955. The initial guests were the entourage of Nikita Krushchev and Mikolai Bulganin, whom we presume thatwere suitably dazzled by the splendour. Further refurbishment under Taj management has continued until the present.
An ideal location for families or guests seeking commercial leisure facilities for an extended stay in Jaipur. A traditional welcome of Marigold garlands and bundis is always loved by the children after a weary journey.
The public rooms contain the grandeur and decoration of their heritage but the standard rooms have been furnished with a more contemporary flavour – rich plain drapes, neatly tailed bed covers and simple, elegant furniture. Columns pick up the earth tones of the region in a restful mix of cream, coffee and russet with just a hint of gold.
Despite its central location near to the many historical landmarks of the region, and its proximity to the main shopping area, the grounds cover 18 acres of beautifully landscaped Mughal gardens spread over 3 levels. A tiered waterway creates cascades past stone pavilions into fountained pools, linked by red stone steps and walkways. The manicured lawns are home to a large circular swimming pool, tennis courts, yoga and jogging track, plus a fully equipped child’s play area.
Rooms and suites are offered in 4 categories from elegant to super luxury and mostly overlook the gardens and the local monkeys.
Restaurants are multi-cuisine, with a choice of a lavishly decorated indoor location or open air dining in the gardens. There is a wonderful blend of the contemporary at Jai Mahal, especially at the Cinnamon India Restaurant. It’s sister Marigold Bar has a young and funky ambience, well known for its Martinis.

Lows |
- Less formal than most of Jaipur’s palace hotels
- Ideal facilities for families
|
- Design and facilities make up for what it is lacking in museum appeal
- City traffic can sometimes be heard from the gardens
- The tented spa beside the pool is rather poorly located given its lack of privacy and proximity to the rooms.
